So, you're thinking about commissioning a Custom Build?
The Feelgood Custom Shop is committed to bringing your idea to life. We offer three basic 'tiers' for our Custom Shop builds: Texas Classics, Custom Shop, and Artisan.
Texas Classics builds aim to offer Custom Shop quality and customization at a more accessible price. Texas Classics feature pre-made, ready-to-go necks that are reshaped and refinished to your needs. We cut the headstock to one of our shapes, and give them your choice of neck finish along with a full fret dress, rolling the edges, and installing a bone (or other material of your choice) nut. So effectively they will look, feel, and play the same as a Custom Shop or Artisan neck with identical specs, you simply have to pick from readily available pre-set neck specs. (See the Necks Page for more info on available specs)
In addition to using pre-made necks, Texas Classics builds will typically have more affordable pickups and hardware (E.G. GFS or Eric Custom Pickups and standard Gotoh/Fender/Allparts etc hardware instead of Boutique pickups and hardware). We know how to get the most 'bang' for the least buck, so a Texas Classics build is great if you find you're often happy with standard parts, hardware, and specs found on modern day USA factory-made guitars, but want to be able to customize the aesthetics, design, and layout like the highest-end custom shop build.
Custom Shop builds offer classic but refined vintage-style construction while opening up the floodgates for options and customization. Custom Shop builds feature a neck made by our friends at Musikraft USA to your precise specifications, which we meticulously hash out with you via email. Choose from a wide range of vintage and modern neck profiles, neck wood choices, inlay and binding options, neck radius and fretwire options, etc. and any of our main headstock shapes! We can even "clone" the precise specs of your favorite guitar neck to ensure your new build feels like home. Bodies are made via CNC here in Texas by Feelgood partner Boris Kusic, also to your exact specs. Options like sloped 'American Pro' body heels and semi-hollow bodies are also available!
For Custom Shop builds, we typically use hand-wound pickups by our partners at Tone Hatch USA or Bootstrap Pickups USA, or similar brands/price points depending on the specific needs of each design/budget. Hardware will be in between the "Standard Gotoh/Fender/Kluson" and "Boutique" levels, according to your budget, wants, and needs.
Artisan Builds are for those who want the very best and most cutting-edge versions of our designs, and all the bells and whistles to go with them! We did our best to think of every possible upgrade we could offer, and threw it in by default! Artisan bodies and necks are made right here in Central Texas in partnership with Polo Guitars USA. Artisan necks by default feature quartersawn maple and carbon fiber reinforcement rods for matchless lifelong stability. They also feature stainless steel frets, virtually eliminating the need for a refret in your lifetime. And of course we also offer any headstock shape you like (including off-menu, new designs just for you), any backshape, fretboard radius, etc.. in addition to opening up the options for wood choices, inlays, and binding to anything you can imagine; Custom, unique colors and materials, your name inlaid on the fretboard, any weird pattern or shape you can imagine, its all possible! Artisan bodies and necks also feature contoured heels, with a smooth transition and "handshake" reminiscent of a set-neck guitar. We have truly pulled out all the stops on this new build tier to make instruments that can stand shoulder to shoulder with the finest in the world, and we're here to prove it.
We select the best of the best parts available for Artisan tier builds, in addition to making quite a few parts in house ourselves such as pickups, bridges, plates, knobs, brackets, switch spacers, 3D printed stuff.. You name it, we can make it or we know someone who can. The "starts at" prices for Artisan Tier on each model page naturally are higher than other levels as they include the very best parts, pickups and hardware we can imagine for the "standard" version of each model, but keep in mind certain variations may be priced lower than the 'starts at' number, or we can use parts and hardware more in line with standard Custom Shop or Texas Classics builds to save a bit on the costs. We may be masters of squeezing maximum value out of affordable parts, but wait til you see what we can do when using the finest materials available!

Spec Your Neck
Arguably the most important part of any guitar or bass. The neck is the main part of the guitar you interface with, and figuring out what you interface with the best is the first key to ensuring you love your guitar. We don't follow the lead of other custom shops who make you choose from 2 or 3 options for neck profiles and measurements, or worse--stick everyone with the same exact neck profile! We believe that you deserve every possible option we can offer to customize your neck and make it exactly what your hands love, even if that means cloning the specs of your favorite guitar's neck exactly.
We offer different levels of customization at each tier, with Artisan builds at the top level opening up the floodgates for any headstock shape, inlay shape, color or style, binding style, etc, and anything else your wild brain can dream up!
Below we will compare and contrast the options available for each tier (briefly) but be sure to check out the Necks Page for more in-depth, detailed lists and explanations of all the specs available for your guitar's build tier.
In essence, TX Classics Necks have limited specs and a few visual styles you choose from, Std Custom Shop Necks give you free choice of any standard inlay, binding, profile, etc. options, and Artisan necks include any options from the Std. CS Necks list, in addition to TONS of more intricate, ornate options for customization and free premium upgrades thrown in.

Picking your Pickups
The most important aspect of electric guitar or bass tone. Here we will compare and contrast different reasons to choose certain 'tiers' of pickups, and the types of things that are available in each tier.
Our philosophy on pickups can be boiled down to this: They're ultimately just wire wrapped around some magnets. Sure, there are clever and unique ways to wind wire around magnets, or use different combinations of magnets, etc. and yield some interesting tones, but at the end of the day, your electric guitar will sound like... an electric guitar.
Despite what flowery marketing speak, expensive packaging/plastics, and advertisement videos with pro-recorded, highly processed, and then compressed-for-YouTube audio may lead you to think.. There are no 'magic' pickups that will make your guitar sound like some new wildly different machine, or improve your playing. You can however find pickups that are well made, great sounding, cool to look at, and have the exact sort of attributes you love in guitar tone so that you feel inspired to make music every time you plug your guitar in. That is what we aim for above all else, and it can often be achieved with "affordable" pickups of the right variety/style, just as well and easily as with more pricey "boutique" pickups.

Standard / TX Classics Pickups
We got our start modifying affordable and entry level guitars to play like pro level instruments, so we are intimately familiar with what "affordable" pickups are junk, and which ones hang with the pros. We won't use anything in our builds that doesn't meet our personal standards.
These Feelgood-trusted brands deliver "name brand" quality at a "generic" price point:
- GFS (Guitar Fetish) - Wide variety of styles, including weirder humbuckers, goldfoils, filtertrons, lipstick pickups, dynasonics, active pickups, etc.
All their pickups have a "kwikplug" 3.5mm mini jack on the back of the casing/bobbin allowing you to instantly swap out for any of their other pickup styles with no soldering required.
- Guitar Madness / Partsland - Wide Variety of rare, hard to find styles of imported pickups.
Styles include: XII Split Coils, Firebird Mini Hums, Hi-Lo-Trons, Bass Humbuckers (unique styles) and more can all be found at G.M.
- Eric Custom - Handwound pickups made by offset guitar fanatic Eric C. in China. Handwound quality at 'generic pickups' price point.
Styles include: Handwound Jazzmaster, Handwound Jaguar, Handwound Mustang, Handwound Strat, etc.

USA Handwound "Baby Boutique" Small-Batch Pickups
This is by far our favorite "tier" of pickups to use, as these USA-based brands and winders are fellow small businesses and deliver handwound, boutique quality at "standard pickup" prices. This allows us to keep build prices lower for you while delivering the uncompromising quality and endless inspiration you expect from a custom handmade guitar.
These Feelgood-trusted brands and boutique winders deliver the goodies in every way shape or form:
Boris Kusic / Feelgood USA - Our own in-house made pickups, handwound one at a time right here in Texas by the Wizard himself, Feelgood partner Boris Kusic. It goes without saying that we stand behind the quality of our pickups, and we do our best to offer them at a reasonable price point, and open up the options for customization to really make them your own.
We offer styles and designs not available anywhere else, including the Marauder/Dreamweaver Type 1 Hidden "Stealth" 16-pole Single Coils, Neodymium high-output XII Split Coils, and Neodymium strat/mustang pickups. We also offer custom shaped/colored pickup covers and bobbins, although these services are available for any pickups we use ;)
Tone Hatch USA - Based in Norfolk, Nebraska. Tone Hatch specialize in offset guitar pickups and single coils, but also offer a meaner, more midrangey PAF style humbucker called the Belkow that is more than worth checking out! Our favorite styles - 2/5 Union (alnico 2 trebles, alnico 5 bass magnets), Seattle '93 JG pickups, Surf Lady JM pickups
Bootstrap Pickups - Handwound in the USA with as many USA-made materials as possible. Bootstrap specialize in single coils, and their offset pickups are extremely renowned in the shoegaze and surf communities.
Our favorite styles - Lake Surfer JM, Big Spotted Cat JG, '54 Vintage Sparkle ST, Extra Crispy or Original Recipe TC
Tonerider Pickups - Professional quality handwound pickups wound in China. They have a marked preference/specialty for humbuckers and p90s of all sorts, and produce a flavor for just about everyone.
Styles include: Rocksong Humbuckers, Birmingham Humbuckers, Panama 80s Humbuckers, Firepower Hi-Gain Humbuckers
- Eric Custom - Handwound pickups made by offset guitar fanatic Eric C. in China. Handwound quality at 'generic pickups' price point.
Styles include: Handwound Jazzmaster, Handwound Jaguar, Handwound Mustang, Handwound Strat, etc.
Q Pickups - Based in Croatia, these hand-winders know whats up when it comes to offsets and oddball designs, and do it for an incredible price!
Favorite Styles: Vintage Correct Grey Bobbin Mustang Pickups, "spread out" HB singles

"Big Name" Boutique Brands / Artisan Pickups
For when you want the absolute best of the best, or a rare/new ultra custom design, this is the tier to go with. However, since the tiers below demonstrate how many incredible sounding pickups are out there at a lower price point, we feel that a brand/style of pickup has to really earn their place on this list to justify the increased cost.
For this reason, most of the pickups that make the cut for this tier are either the best available noiseless, or hum-canceling versions of standard pickup styles OR they are ultra rare styles of pickups not offered anywhere else. If you insist on us using some standard A5 "Big Name Boutique" Jazzmaster pickups we certainly will, but in our humble opinion the Bootstrap Lake Surfers or Tone Hatch Surf Lady's will sound every bit as pleasant with a much lower impact on your build's cost. Just our two cents!
These Feelgood-trusted brands deliver best-in-the-world quality and designs not found anywhere else:
Kinman Noiseless - If you want simply the best of the best of the best, look no further than Kinman. Kinman has proprietary methods for making hum-canceling single coils that retain all the bite, character, and mids of their standard single coil counterparts. A feat that is quite impressive for particularly bright pickups like Jg or JM pickups. Most noiseless singles sound somewhat flat, almost filtered. So there is traditionally a tradeoff for eliminating the single coil hum; the richness of your tone. But not with Kinman!
If you find yourself constantly battling hum, these might be the best way to win that battle once and for all while retaining the character you love about your guitar.
Our favorite styles: Noiseless JM, Noiseless JG, Noiseless ST, Noiseless TC, Noiseless p90
Lollar USA - Lollar make some seriously cool shit. Lets just get that out of the way. They make a lot of things that nobody else can even dream of. For those unique, special designs, they are second to none. Lollar have consistently made some of the best pickups in the game for years, but they do come with a deservedly high price tag like others in this tier. For this reason, we say if you're gonna go Lollar, lets go for one of their super unique styles below to really let their quality shine!
Our favorite styles: Super-Caster, goldfoil SC, Deluxe Foil Humbuckers, Guild Humbuckers, Charlie Christian, "Staple" Soapbars, Novel T, Noiseless P90's
Curtis Novak - Another veteran of the game who makes some extremely cool shit, albeit with another deservedly high price tag. He has some incredibly versatile offerings that make Novaks a MUST for certain builds/styles of pickups.
Our favorite styles: Performer Pickups, H22 Goldfoil, GT-V Goldfoil, Goldfoil Diamond JM, Diamond Goldfoil, JM-HC Diamond Goldfoil, M/s Goldfoil Humbucker, JM-T, Phase III Humbucker, Marauder, JM-HC Argyle Goldfoil, Hi-Tron, Mosrite HMB, Mosrite Mark V
Mojo Pickups (UK) - Handwound, incredibly unique and inspiring pickup designs. Mojo offers tons of radical designs that wont be found elsewhere.
Our favorite styles: Dualfoil Humbucker, Dualfoil Jazzmaster humbucker, Jazzmaster Teisco Goldfoil, ST Deco-Foil, Teisco Goldfoil, Deco-Sonic, CuNiFe Wide Range HB
Hashing out Hardware
Quality hardware is a MUST for any custom build if you ask us... However high quality doesn't have to come with a high price tag. We have become quite adept at finessing the best performance possible out of inexpensive parts, and as a result we FIRMLY believe: whether using boutique parts or cheap import parts, its all in the setup, baby!
Like pickups, we have separated hardware into three basic tiers, however these tiers are not explicitly tied to your build level, more just meant to give an idea of which parts will lead to a more expensive build, and what level of hardware you will be happy with.

Standard / TX Classics Hardware
Due to our extensive backgrounds in repair and modifying guitars for customers, we know what hardware is likely to suit certain types of players. We also know that high quality doesnt always have to come with a high price tag, and importantly know how to slightly modify/alter hardware to make it function even better than its stock form. Things like filing/sanding sharp burrs, changing out springs, changing out screws for properly sized or longer/sturdier screws, applying threadlocker to ensure tight fitting screws, etc. are all done by default on any piece of hardware we work with, as needed. Much like with pickups, we won't use anything on our builds that doesn't meet our personal standards.
Below are some options for common types of hardware that fall into the 'standard' range and will keep your build price as low as possible:
Offset Vibrato - Fender Classic Player (screw in arm, when properly set up with some Feelgood tricks, it is fantastic and the arm stays in place when not in use--no swinging loose arms!), or Modified Unbranded Offset Vibrato with upgraded stronger spring.
+ optional Feelgood custom shaped/engraved vibrato plate ($30 upcharge for any vibrato)
Offset Bridge - Standard Mustang style bridge - Available in 7.25", 9.5", adjustable radius or "Bubba Modded" 3-saddle homemade adjustable radius boutique version (upcharge but cheaper than boutique bridge), Optional nylon or metal sleeves to prevent bridge rocking
Hardtail Bridge - Fender Toronado, Modded Fender Toronado 3-saddle bridge "Duo Sonic" conversion, Modded 3-saddle hardtail standard bridge, Fender standard hardtail bridge, JM style hardtail plate--engraved 6 or 12 strings, 12 string hardtail w/ or w/o surround plate, LP style stoptail/TOM, Wraparound Stoptail, MM Trapezoid Bass Hardtail, Std. Bass Hardtail
Dynamic Vibrato - Fender or Warmoth Mustang Vibrato, or Modified Warmoth Vibrato w/ upgraded springs & custom engraved Feelgood plate (upcharge)
S-Style Tremolo - Fender or Guyker (variety of finishes, full size block, vintage style saddles)
T-Style bridge - Short cut, Standard vintage 3-saddle, 6-saddle, Fender, Kaish, or similar
Tuners - Std Vintage Tuners, Fender F Tuners, White Button vintage tuners, vintage locking tuners, modern tuners, modern locking tuners
(variety of colors and styles available for each)

Upgraded Standard or "Baby Boutique" Hardware
This 'tier' of hardware is where probably the best bang-for-buck ratio is found. We have scoured the internet for upgraded options for certain types of parts. Any single piece of hardware here will have a small impact on your build's total cost, but not nearly as much as the "Big Name Boutique" brands in the next tier.
If you, for example, want an 'upgraded' offset bridge, vibrato, etc and are thinking a $450 Mastery Kit is the only option, check out this list!
Below are 'upgraded' options for common pieces of hardware that wont add a huge amount to your total, but will be more expensive than the Standard / TX Classics tier:
Offset Vibrato - Fender AVRI Vibrato, Kluson Custom Shop Vibrato, Trent Guitars Vibrato
(Upgrade to custom shaped/engraved Feelgood vibrato plate for +$30)
Offset Bridge - DWG Offset Bridge (fixed posts, adjustable radius, looks really cool, works great, affordable), Feelgood Modified Mustang Bridge (affordably modded with 3 tele saddles in house for increased stability and radius adjustment-- rocking bridge but includes removable metal sleeves to fix in place)
Hardtail Bridge - Descendant "Esquier" bridge, Descendant "Blue Collar" bridge, Halon Duo-Sonic, Halon Musicmaster, Halon Musicmaster Bass
Dynamic Vibrato - We are working with some hardware manufacturers on a 'boutique' dynamic m-style vibrato, and hope to have an option here soon. Until then the best option available is a vintage Fender unit.
S-Style Tremolo - Callaham S Bridge, Fender USA S bridge, Modded Highwater Saddles (hides height screws)
T-Style Bridge - Gotoh In-Tune, Halon Tele Bridges
Upgraded Tuners - Kluson Supreme vintage style tuners, Graph Tech Ratio vintage style open-gear tuners, White Button Fender F tuners, Grover Milk Bottle tuners

"Big Name" Boutique / Artisan Hardware
Sometimes you just want the best, most stable hardware you can possibly get, with no modding or fine tuning really required. The absolute finest stuff made by mankind. And I can respect it!
While we feel the parts in the previous "upgraded standard" tier can be made to play and feel about 95-99% as good as these options, sometimes you're just chasing those last few percents of nirvana, and these parts will help deliver that.
Below are what we feel are the very best options for upgraded parts and hardware available, and the reasons why we love them.
Offset Vibrato - Tuffset Vibrato (new design coming very soon -- the best we've ever seen!), Mastery Vibrato (old standby for the most fluid feeling vibrato on the market, previously unchallenged), Descendant Vibrato (increased break angle for more sustain/resonance)
Offset Bridge - Tuffset Classic or Fixie (superior intonation, fully adjustable radius, no screws or springs, fixed post or rocking design), Mastery Bridge (old standby upgrade bridge, fixed post, adjustable radius), Descendant Companion Bridge, Thorn Brass Knuckle Bridge
Hardtail Bridge - Mastery Hardtail, Mastery Tele, Thorn Brass Knuckle Tele
Mixing the Paint
Here's where things start looking pretty...
We take pride in being masters of finish work. We know all too well that paint and final fit+finish is what separates the best from the rest. In the age of affordable CNC machines, open-source modeling software, and a thriving global supply chain, getting a well made body or neck cut out of a hunk of wood is actually rather easy. What's not so easy, however, is finishing that neck and body in a way that not only looks, but feels premium and inspiring. This is why so many builders go to great lengths to hide the fact that they send their guitars off to shops like mine for paint. Guitar paint work crosses the territory from a "craft" to an "art" and it takes an artist's brain to get any sort of enjoyment out of such a complex and rather unforgiving process. Which is why you're currently on the right website if you want a one-of-a-kind finish on your guitar that will ignite creativity every time you glance at it.
We approach paint work on our custom builds with a flat-rate pricing structure for the most part, not nickle and dime-ing you for small finish details or things that make the guitar cooler. Whether a TX Classics build or Artisan build, we will give the exact same energy and care to executing your idea with precision. You dont pick from a handful of boring overused colors with us, we will hunt down any rare color you can dream up and 'take the journey' with you to see what wild results we can come up with. We love this stuff!

No upcharges for normal finish stuff
NO UPCHARGE EVER for the following:
Matching Headstocks - We think every guitar honestly just looks better with a matching headstock. Despite it being a little more work, we don't charge extra for a matching headstock on custom builds because we love them so much!
Custom Color Matching - Send us a swatch of at least 4in x 4in and we'll use our color match camera to mix some paint in the exact color you envision. This is an upcharge for finishing orders, but included free if needed with any custom build.
Grain Filling - no upcharges apply for grain filling open pore woods like Ash, Wenge, Rosewood, etc on custom builds. It can be quite a time consuming process, but we believe this is just another incentive to order 'fancier' and cooler stuff from us.

Widest selection of colors available anywhere.
We have dozens of sources and connections for paints of all types, and are skilled in using everything from airbrushes to brushes/pens and HVLP guns to spray cans. Between all these sources and mediums, there is just about no look we cant do. Visit the Colors and Finishing/Paint Work pages for more detailed info on offerings and swatches.

Custom artwork & hand painting available!
I have been an artist all my life and love when I get a chance to paint with brushes. If you want custom hand painted or airbrushed (or a combo of both) art on your guitar, simply send some style references or a description with as much detail as possible and I will be happy to make it happen if my abilities allow and you like my art style!
Making it Yours
None of our designs are "set in stone" and we welcome you to request any changes you can dream up to make your build more personal to you. Want a different scale length than normal? We can do it! Want a different pickguard shape or to add some unique polished stainless steel control plates? We can do it! Want a unique headstock shape that we don't currently offer? Well, as long as it's not trademarked and will function properly, we can do it! Want your name inlaid on the fretboard? We can do it!
Bottom line is: dont let the 'standard versions' you see on the model pages fool you into thinking thats how the guitar has to look. We welcome you to let your imagination run wild and truly dream up a dream guitar, whatever that looks like to you.

Multiple variants available for most models
Most models will have at least 2 or 3 different 'variants' available. This may include different pickguard shapes/layouts, different scale lengths, different numbers of strings etc.
You are always welcome to dream up your own variants though! We're always happy to work up preliminary sketches during the consultation process so you can see roughly how your ideas will translate, and we will work with you to refine the design and hone in on the ultimate, best version of your idea.

If it fits, it sits!
We'll put practically whatever parts on your guitar that you want, as long as the geometry allows. We can assist you in placing the bells and whistles in locations that make sense and allow you to utilize them effortlessly without interfering with play.

Semi-Hollow versions available for almost everything
Almost all of our designs can be made as a semi-hollow body with a few small changes. Add some wonderful acoustic resonance and volume to your guitar and you're just about guaranteed to have a "comfy couch classic" on your hands!
